## What is the formula, in plain text?

Take-home = gross salary − pension (salary sacrifice) − Income Tax − employee National Insurance − student loan. Income Tax = 20% of income from £12,570 to £50,270 + 40% from £50,270 to £125,140 + 45% above (the £12,570 Personal Allowance falls by £1 for every £2 over £100,000). Employee NI = 8% of earnings from £12,570 to £50,270 + 2% above. Student loan = 9% (6% Postgraduate) of income above the plan threshold.

## What rates and thresholds apply?

## What are some worked examples?

| Gross salary | Income Tax | Employee NI | Take-home a year | Take-home a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £20,000 | £1,486 | £594 | £17,920 | £1,493 |
| £35,000 | £4,486 | £1,794 | £28,720 | £2,393 |
| £50,000 | £7,486 | £2,994 | £39,520 | £3,293 |
| £60,000 | £11,432 | £3,211 | £45,357 | £3,780 |
| £100,000 | £27,432 | £4,011 | £68,557 | £5,713 |

Examples assume no pension, no student loan, tax code 1257L and an even annual salary. NI is worked out on annual thresholds (£12,570 / £50,270); payroll uses weekly or monthly thresholds (£242 / £967 a week), so real payslips can differ by a few pounds. Scotland is not covered.
